Mrs. Kate Bracknell Dorn

MCCORMICK, SC — Kate Bracknell Dorn, 98, died peacefully on Monday, April 2, 2018 at Forest View Manor.

Kate was the daughter of the late John Luther and Nina Stillwell Bracknell. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Neal Dorn; infant daughter; grandson, Caz Dorn; her parents; and siblings.

She was a retired school teacher, a profession she loved. She served on numerous boards, volunteered for organizations and was fortunate enough to win distinctive awards for some of her services, one of which was being chosen Mrs. S.C. Senior America and Most Vivacious while in Atlantic City. She was an avid walker and loved music and people. As long as her health allowed, she spent most of her time serving others. She once told her daughter that she would like to be able to give her own eulogy and actually wrote what she wanted to say. Since there will be no formal service or visitation, we are using this means to invite you to share in this time. One of her favorite hymns was “Others” and Bible verse Matthew 25:40 – “In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Her favorite charities were St. Jude and March of Dimes. She strongly believed in “giving flowers while you are living,” which she did, and so many of you did for her.

Try to imagine her standing here wearing her signature newsboy cap, pearls and a scarf saying, “This is not the time that I want to say things about me, but to reflect on how blessed I have been to have been brought up in a good home with Christian parents. I was also blessed with a wonderful husband, children, friends and students. God gave me the talent of music, which I have loved ever since I can remember. So, if you choose to remember me, just say Kate loved life and living. She counted her blessings, for they were numerous. I will leave you with one thought … Live each day as it might be your last.”

She is survived by her children George N. Dorn Jr. (Kathy) of Lexington, Kay D. Brewer (Harold) of McCormick, Sandy Osborne, of Columbia and John C. Dorn (Sharon) of McCormick; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of the service, we ask that her legacy and memory be honored by showing an act of kindness to someone or by spending time with your loved ones.
